Sacred Reading:

What Do You Expect?

by Rev. Dr. Carol Winkfield, Pastor

We must remember that our expectations have everything to do with how we experience things in life. Humans learn at a very early age to rely on expectations to help in life. If a child gets burned because of touching a hot stove, she will learn to expect stoves to be hot and therefore she is careful while approaching one. This kind of expectation, born out of experience, serves us well.

Sometimes, however, our expectations do not serve us. We would never expect that it will rain every day just because it rained one day, or even 2 or 3 days in a row, would we? That's because we understand that each new day brings new things into play in our lives. Yet, it is not uncommon for people to fall into beliefs about life based on what has gone on before. For example, you may hear it said, "I'm just no good at math, I struggled with it all during school." Or, "oh, we tried it that way once and it didn't work; there is no need to try that again." Or, "Life is just hard for me: it never gets any better." These kind of expectations, whether about math or about life are not good for us because they negate the newness of Spirit which is ever within us. What Do You Expect? Relate this question to your life as you meditate on this week's message. Find meaning in the scripture below. Come join us at our Sunday Celebration Service to explore these discussions further. God Bless you

Mathew 13:47 – 48, 51 – 52

Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away.

"Have you understood all these things?" Jesus asked.
      "Yes," they replied.

He said to them, "Therefore every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old."

 Isaiah 43:18 – 19

"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!   Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?  I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”

Amen, amen
